 Writing Center Myths & Truths

1.       The tutor will correct my paper.

Actually, a good tutor will not write on your paper. The tutor should be willing to address any specific grammar or punctuation concerns you may have, but will try to focus on organization and clarity foremost.

2.       The tutor will tell me if my paper is good, or can tell me what grade I am getting.

Writing is very subjective and although the tutor will try to acknowledge strengths and have a positive attitude, only your teacher can determine what grade category your paper falls under.

3.       The tutor will tell me what is wrong with my paper.

The person who must determine what is wrong with your paper is you. It is a good idea to think out concerns and questions before you bring your paper to the session. The tutors are glad to offer feedback, but you have the ultimate control over what goes in and out of your paper.

4.       The Writing Center is there for help with my English classes.

Actually, the tutors at the Writing Center are happy to help students with any writing assignment. You are welcome to use the Writing Center for other classes, essays, resumes or college applications.

5.       I can’t go to the Writing Center because I haven’t started my paper.

The tutors are there to help you with any stage of the writing process. If you are having trouble coming up with ideas or getting started, feel free to use the Writing Center as a brainstorming resource.
