Five New Faculty Members Join USU Brigham City

Five new faculty members joined the USU Brigham City campus in August 2008. They are:

  • Dr. Emily L. Jones, assistant professor of Anthropology, will work in collaboration with the Logan-based Anthropology Program to direct a new minor in Anthropology through distance education. Her class during the Fall 2008 Semester, will be World Archeology. Dr. Jones graduated from Vassar College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Anthropology degree, and received a Master’s in 2001 and PhD in 2004 from University of Washington. Emily comes to Utah State University Brigham City from the Diné College, the tribal college located on the Navajo Nation of New Mexico.
  • Dr. S. Heath Mitton, assistant professor of History, will be based USU Brigham City. He will teach three courses this coming fall semester – America in the Age of Jefferson and Jackson, American Civilization, and United States History to 1877. Mitton received his Bachelor of History from Western State College of Colorado in 1993, Master’s of History in 1995 from University of Texas at Arlington, and his PhD of History from Louisiana State University in 2005. This past year, Dr. Mitton was a visiting professor in the Utah State University Logan History Department.

  • Dr. Sean Camp, clinical assistant professor of social work, will coordinate the Master’s of Social Work program for regional campuses and distance education. Dr. Camp will be based at USU Brigham City, teaching master’s level courses, as well as providing field placement supervision for Utah State University Master’s of Social Work students. Dr. Camp received his bachelor of psychology from Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. Camp obtained both his master’s and PhD in social work from The University of Georgia. Dr. Camp has worked over 15 years in the mental health and social services field, most recently in therapeutic foster care programs.

  • Dr. Jennifer J. Peterson, assistant professor of elementary education received her bachelor of elementary and middle school education from the University of Virginia, and her PhD in Curriculum Studies from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Peterson has worked in the education field for 25 years and will bring her expertise in elementary education, reading instruction, diversity issues, and social studies education to her new position at USU Brigham City.

  • Dr. Thayne Sweeten, biology lecturer and laboratory coordinator, will be teaching courses such as Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology. Sweeten will also oversee laboratory courses, which will be taught in the new laboratories currently under construction. Dr. Sweeten received a Bachelor of Psychology from Utah State University in 1997, and PhD in Medical Neurobiology with a minor in Anatomy from Indiana University in 2003. Sweeten was the 2006 recipient of the Dissertation Award from the International Society for Autism Research in recognition of his research on autism. Prior to this appointment, Sweeten, was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Persons with Disabilities located on the Logan campus.
