Camile Fairbourn Receives Honor

Camille Fairbourn On May 11, 2007, the Utah System of Higher Education presented Camille Fairbourn with the Award of Merit in Creative use of Multiple Media.  Camille teaches Math and Statistics via the UEN Digital Satellite System, via IP Video, online, and face-to-face and is deeply appreciated by her students. Her colleagues admire her dedication to using technology in all forms for the benefit of her students. Camille is always asking for the latest in technology so that she can incorporate that technology into her classes for the benefit of her students.

Camille uses a Hitachi Starboard monitor/tablet in place of the traditional whiteboard as she demonstrates mathematical and statistical concepts to her students. She then captures her demonstrations in digital form and digitally records her verbal explanations of her demonstrations. She will then merge the captured written demonstrations with her verbal explanations and create PowerPoint presentations that completely restate the days lecture in digital form. Camille will immediately place the PowerPoint compilation of her classroom demonstrations on her class website (WebCT/Blackboard) so that students have accurate and timely reference materials to help reinforce the concepts covered in class that day.

Using Camtasia and Adobe Premiere Camille has created and edited video lectures of math and statistic concepts that she uses in her online classes and also makes them available for all of her students as supplemental resources. Camille is often found in her office or classroom seemingly talking to herself as she creates multi-media materials to support her students as they learn a difficult subject.

Camille uses Macromedia Breeze and web video so that students from across the state have access to her for online office hours. Students schedule the Breeze meetings with Camille through email communication. Camille uses a digital tablet during these online office hours so that she can work through math and statistic problems while online with the student. Camille’s student course evaluations continually reflect very positive comments from students at distance locations complimenting her for the effort she extends to make their learning experience better.

Camille is very proficient at incorporating technology into her teaching and her dedication to technology to improve instruction is greatly appreciated by her students, her colleagues, and USU administration. It is a privilege for me to nominate Camille Fairbourn, Math and Statistics lecturer, for USHE Exemplary Faculty Use of Technology Award.
