2006 Commencement

Utah State University Brigham City held the 14th Annual Commencement and Graduate Recognition Program on Friday, April 21, 2006. Commencement began at 6:00 pm with the processional of graduates, faculty, and dignitaries. Three masters, 37 baccalaureate, and 14 associate degrees were conferred upon a total of 54 graduates. In addition, three individuals received Administrative/Supervisory Certificates.

 
Dr. Andy Shinkle, Utah State University Brigham City Executive Director, welcomed the graduates and guests. Following Dr. Shinkle’s remarks, the Student Government presented the Faculty of the Year and Staff of the Year awards. Faculty of the Year Awards were presented to Kevin Young (Biology), Dr. Victor Harris (Family, Consumer & Human Development), Marko DeMonja (History), and Dr. Mark Ewing (Math). The Staff of the Year Award was presented to Della Burwell, Facility Coordinator.
 
Three graduate speakers graced fellow graduates and guests with their wisdom. JaNae Burger, graduate and Student Body President, quoted Paulo Coehlo’s The Alchemist, wherein are presented three obstacles one must overcome for success.
 
James Kontoh, Utah State University Brigham City Campus’ first international graduate, addressed the importance of education. James stated that his family had sacrificed much to make his education possible. He said, “Graduating from this university is nothing short of a miracle.” He quoted an Ashanti proverb, “When you climb a good tree, good people gave a push.”
 
Kiersten Hewitt, a summa cum laude Psychology graduate, also used ideas presented in Paulo Coehlo’s The Alchemist. She stated, “I did not receive this degree alone. To my family I say, ‘We did it!’” All of our graduate speakers graduated with honors and plan to continue their university studies.
 
Provost Raymond T. Coward was our commencement speaker.
 
Ted Dilworth, Utah State University Brigham City music instructor, favored everyone with his original composition entitled Winter Charm
 
Provost Coward conferred degrees upon the graduates followed by the Introduction of Graduates and Presentation of Graduates.
